Sweet and fruity with a hint of ginger, this ginger and orange sorbet recipe is perfect for summer. Make it in the ice cream maker with just three ingredients for a refreshing dessert or snack! Great for kids and adults.
In summer I love my ice cream maker! With a 2 young children and a husband to keep happy it is definitely one of our favourite gadgets. We all love homemade sorbet as well as other frozen desserts.
My banana fudge ice cream and mango sorbet are both really popular.
What is this orange and ginger sorbet like?
This sorbet is deliciously sweet with a strong orange flavour. The ginger comes through well too. You can definitely taste it but it's not too fiery.
Is it worth buying an ice cream maker?
I bought my ice cream maker for less than £30 about ten years ago so yes, for us it has definitely been worth it.
Having an ice cream maker means you can experiment and make all those flavours that you just can't buy easily.
I might be able to buy orange ice lollies in my local supermarket but orange sorbet? Probably not.
Orange and ginger sorbet? Almost certainly not!
What ingredients do you need?
This easy orange and ginger sorbet has just three ingredients! Yes, that's right. You don't need lots of ingredients for homemade sorbet like this. I've used pure 100% squeezed orange juice, sugar and a little fresh root ginger.
How do you make this orange sorbet?
It's very easy to make this sorbet recipe. Just put the juice, sugar and sliced ginger into a saucepan and bring to the boil.
Then take it off the heat and leave to cool completely.
Fish out the pieces of ginger and pour into the ice cream maker. It'll take about 20-30 minutes to churn
Finally you can transfer it to a freezer container and freeze until you're ready to eat it.
How long can you freeze it for?
It'll keep in the freezer for up to three months.
How hard does it freeze?
This sorbet should not freeze too solidly. If it is too hard to scoop then take it out of the freezer and leave to stand for 15 minutes before serving.
Can you adapt this sorbet recipe?
Why not experiment by following the same recipe but using another kind of fruit juice?
Or leave out the ginger for a simple 2 ingredient orange sorbet made with just juice and sugar.
If you don't have fresh root ginger then use a little crystallised ginger or a pinch of ground ginger.
Another great addition to this sorbet is the juice of a lime. Squeeze it into the orange and sugar mixture before putting in the ice cream maker. The lime adds a lovely sharpness and stops it from being too sweet if you don't have a really sweet tooth.
How to get your sorbet right?
Basically, aim for about 20-30% sugar content to get a smooth creamy consistency that's easy to scoop out.

What to serve with this orange sorbet?
This fruity orange and ginger sorbet is delicious by itself.
However, it's also lovely served with fruit. You could put it in an ice cream cone or drizzle it with compote. Or serve it with some shortbread or ginger biscuits.
