Who doesn't love ice cream, sorbet, ice lollies and other frozen treats? I've got healthy and indulgent frozen recipes including mango sorbet, banana fudge ice cream, blackcurrant frozen yogurt as well as homemade ice lollies. So come and get some cold homemade frozen dessert recipe inspiration! You'll find links to all my favourite frozen desserts in this post.
I love making homemade frozen dessert recipes for my family and they are among my most popular recipes. Every year I come up with new frozen snack recipes my children love that I can make and store in the freezer.
After all, I love make ahead recipes and frozen treats are the ultimate make ahead dessert. You can make them the same day, a day in advance or a whole month in advance. Being able to choose when to prepare food makes it so much easier to eat homemade food. And the best thing is, you know exactly what's in it!
Are homemade frozen dessert recipes healthier?
Well, it depends. You can get loads of fruit only no added sugar frozen desserts these days. However, sometimes you know exactly what you want to eat, but you can't get it in the shops. After all, when was the last time you saw a supermarket selling kiwi sorbet? Or heart-shaped frozen yogurt?
Of course, some shop-bought ice cream treats are full of strange sounding ingredients that definitely don't need to go in the homemade version. Then, even if it's full of cream and sugar, I like to think that at least I know what's in it!
Do you need special equipment to make frozen desserts?
Well, the answer is no but it helps. I bought my ice cream maker almost ten years ago and I still use it regularly. It cost me less than thirty pounds. At the time I thought it was a bit of an indulgent purchase but unlike my pasta maker, it really has been used again and again!
It's so much easier to make ice cream in the ice cream maker than having to keep taking half-frozen ice cream out of the freezer to whisk every hour. The texture of ice cream made in an ice cream maker is smoother, creamier and just better than that made by hand.
Having said that, it's still worth making ice cream even if you haven't got a machine. After all, homemade ice cream is delicious, however you make it.
My favourite homemade ice cream recipes
My personal favourites have to be the banana fudge ice cream and the pistachio and cardamom ice cream. They are totally different from each other but both just so good!
Plus these ice cream recipes
- Kiwi fruit ice cream
- Chocolate ice cream mousse - I'm not sure if this recipe belongs here or not. It started out as ice cream but was just too thick to churn. However, it was so good I had to keep it!
Homemade Sorbet Recipes
As well as ice cream I love making homemade sorbet too. It's less heavy than ice cream and so refreshing!
Homemade Frozen Yogurt Recipes
I think frozen yogurt is great as it's just a little healthier than ice cream and a little lighter. It's also very versatile.
If you like these then you might also like my rhubarb and fromage frais hearts. You don't have to make them with rhubarb. Any stewed fruit will do!
Homemade Ice Lolly Recipes
I have three really healthy homemade ice lolly recipes. They are ideal for making if you have an ice lolly mould but if you don't, moulds are very easy and cheap to buy. It's definitely worth getting one if you have young children!
Nice Cream Recipes
I also have three nice cream recipes at the moment! In case you're wondering, nice cream, is made with frozen pureed fruit to get a dessert that has the texture of ice cream but is completely dairy free!
