These spicy sweet potato fritters are a brilliant easy recipe for breakfast with eggs, for lunch as a side or even just with a salad as I've served them here. They are packed with spices, garlic and chilli pepper which makes them really tasty and definitely worth making. They're also a great way to get some of your 5-a-day!
If you are looking for more interesting ways to cook sweek potato then why not try these spicy sweet potato fritters? The sweet potato is grated and then mixed with onion, garlic, chilli pepper, egg, flour and spices. Then just fry them in a little oil.
The outside is crispy and the inside is delicious and soft. Just make sure the heat is not too high on the frying pan so that they don't burn before the sweet potato is cooked through.
Ingredient notes for spicy sweet potato fritters
Do check out the full recipe futher down the page for quantities. To make these sweet potato fritters you'll need:
- Sweet potatoes - although I've used sweet potatoes for these, they would also work with regular potatoes. You could also try them with a different root vegetable.
- Plain flour - I used plain flour but you could use any flour. Buckwheat flour or chickpea flour would also work well in these.
- Eggs - I used large eggs
- Onion - I used red onion but regular brown onions would work too.
- Garlic - I used fresh garlic but you could also use a paste or puree
- Chilli pepper - I used 1 supermarket chilli pepper. If you like really spicy fritters, add one or two more chilli peppers or use spicer peppers such as scotch bonnet.
- Spices - I used a mixture of ground coriander, cumin, chilli powder and turmeric. If you don't have these spices you could just use a curry powder. You could also alter the flavour profile by using a different spice blend for example a Mexican spice blend would work well.
- Cooking oil - I used vegetable oil but sunflower oil or even a light olive oil would work.
How to make spicy sweet potato fritters
Again, do check out the recipe card further down the post. These fritters are very easy to make. First prepare all the vegetables. I grated the sweet potatoes in a food processor to make it easier but you could grate them by hand too.
Mix together all the ingredients and heat up the oil in a frying pan. Add spoonfuls of the mixture and fry the fritters on each side for about 5 minutes. Make sure the heat is not too high or they will burn before they are cooked in the middle. A medium-low heat is best. Alternatively you can cook them in the air fryer on a piece of non-stick baking paper.
Adaptations and substitutions
Fritters are such an easy recipe to adapt. You could add extra vegetables, replace some or all of the sweet potato with a different root vegetable.
The spices can also be switched up. Use your favourite spice blend to give them your favourite flavour.
Can you bake or air fry them?
Yes, I've also cooked these in the air fryer and they crisp up really nicely. Put the batter on a piece of non-stick baking paper and air fry for 8 minutes at 195C, turning over half way through.
I haven't tested them in the oven but you could try them. Again, put them on a tray lined with non-stick baking paper. I would suggest 15 minutes at 200C.
What to eat with sweet potato fritters
I sometimes eat these sweet potato fritters with salad for an easy lunch. They are nice crumbled with feta too. You can just make them as a potato side dish with grilled meats. They are also delicious with eggs for breakfast or brunch.
Storing and reheating the leftovers
Any leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container. I usually reheat them in the air fryer so they go crispy again. Alternatively put them in the oven for a few minutes to reheat.
Can you reheat them in the microwave?
Yes you can but they lose their crispiness. I'd definitely recommend using the oven or air fryer instead.
