This homemade mango lassi with cardamom is such a refreshing drink. You could make it to go with an Indian meal, have it as dessert or even breakfast. Made with mango, yogurt, honey and cardamon, it's easy to make and delicious too!
If you like to get a mango lassi when you go to an Indian restaurant then why not make one at home too? It's really simple and if you make your own smoothies then it's just the same. Basically, a lassi is a thick smoothie made with yogurt.
But, it's not simply a mango smoothie. To get that lassi flavour you need to add just a touch of spice. I've stayed traditional in this one and added a little cardamom. Not too much though. Too much cardamom can be overpowering and ruin whatever you're making. The key is to add just a little. You can always add a little more.
That's the great thing about making your own lassi at home. You can get it exactly the way you like it. As long as you have a blender you're good to go.
So, what ingredients are in a mango lassi?
To make this homemade mango lassi with cardamom you'll need:
- Cardamom - I use just one cardamom pod. I remove the seeds and crush them in a pestle and motar before adding them to the smoothie.
- Mango - I use fresh mango. For this recipe I needed two mangos.
- Natural yogurt - I use natural Greek yogurt. You can use low fat or full fat.
- Honey - This is for adding a little extra sweetness. You can replace it with agave nectar, maple syrup or even sugar. You can also miss it out if you feel the lassi is sweet enough already.
How do you make a mango lassi?
As long as you have a blender it's very easy to make a mango lassi. If you have a jug blender, put everything in the jug and blitz it. Taste it and then add a little extra honey or cardamom if you feel it needs it. It's always better to be cautious at first and then add more later.
What equipment do you need?
To make the lassi you will need a blender. A jug blender is easiest and I often use my Optimum Froothie Evolve. It has lots of other settings so is really useful if you want a powerful blender that you can make soups in too.
However, you can just use a stick blender for this mango lassi with cardamom as all the ingredients are quite soft and blend very easily.
It's also useful to have a pestle and mortar to crush the cardamom unless you have some ground cardamom.
How can you adapt the recipe?
You can adapt this recipe and make it with a different fruit instead of mango. Although mango lassis are the most well-known and the ones you are most likely to get in Indian restaurants here in the UK, there's no reason not to try it with any other fruit. Peaches work really well, as do pineapple and berries.
You can also use a different spice instead of cardamom. Why not try a little cinnamon or vanilla extract? It's also nice with a little rose water. As with the cardamom, be frugal and don't add too much at first as rose water can also be a little over-powering.
If you find that this lassi recipe is too thick for you, you can add a little milk to thin it down when you are blending it. Or just add a little water.
Can you use tinned mango?
Yes you can. Tinned mango works just as well as fresh mango. You can also use mango puree in a lassi instead of fresh mango. However, mango puree is often sweetened so you may not want to add as much honey or even any honey at all.
Can you make it vegan or dairy free?
Yes, if you want to make this mango lassi vegan, just use a vegan yogurt. And if you want to thin it down a little, use a plant-based milk.
You can also easily replace the honey with agave nectar, maple syrup or sugar.
Can you make it in advance?
I prefer not to make it too far in advance and normally make it just before drinking it. However, you can make it and keep it for up to 24 hours. Just stir well before drinking in case it has separated. Alternatively, blitz it again in the blender.

Love mango lassi, but not sure I've ever had it with cardamom... that has to be tried! 😀

I'm sure you'd love it with cardamom. I just use a little so it gives a slight hint of flavour as I think it can be a bit overpowering otherwise.

I have never tried a Lassi but I have a friend who loves them and will always order one when we're out. Now I can try my own at home and make it dairy free too with a simple switch.

Thanks Helen and thanks for hosting. The cardamom is lovely in this but not very strong as I didn't want it to be overpowering!

Thanks Lesley, I'm so pleased you like it. I've kept the cardamom very subtle too so you might want to add a little more if you really like it.
