This banana, avocado and Nutella smoothie is such a healthy way to start the day and even feels like a treat!
Have you tried an avocado smoothie yet?
A few years ago I would never have even considered putting avocado in a smoothie. Avocado and banana smoothie? No way! Avocado banana and Nutella smoothie? Still no!
Ok, that was a few years ago. These days avocado and banana smoothies are almost mainstream. Adding cacao or cocoa is not unusual and adding Nutella? Well, adding Nutella to this smoothie is just perfect.
Why you HAVE to add Nutella to a smoothie
Adding Nutella to this creamy banana and avocado smoothie makes it taste amazing. Trust me! If you want a sweet chocolate flavour rather than a cacao taste then it has to be Nutella. Well, it doesn't have to be Nutella. You can use an alternative chocolate spread. Plain chocolate spread works as does any Nutella alternative. I'm not picky about what brand you use.
Is a Nutella Smoothie healthy?
You may think that because this smoothie has Nutella in that it is unhealthy. That is definitely not the case. I only add a little Nutella but you can still taste it. It make this avocado and banana smoothie deliciously chocolatey. After all, if you want chocolate in a smoothie you want to be able to enjoy it, right?
The inspiration for this Banana, avocado and Nutella smoothie
When I first posted this smoothie recipe it was as part of a challenge to make a smoothie using at least one vegetable. At that time I had never ever used any type of vegetable in a smoothie and never had any desire to use one.
There was certainly no way I was going to whip up a carrot, tomato and spinach combo, despite loving these vegetables eaten in the more traditional way.
It's now a few years later and I have to say my thinking has changed completely! Well, I'd still probably add some mango to that carrot and spinach mix!
The first time I made this avocado banana Nutella smoothie
I looked through a list of vegetables for inspiration. I saw avocado and I thought about how much my friend's baby loved the combination of avocado and banana. How could I jazz that up?
I also wondered whether it be wrong to take inspiration from a baby. Clearly I decided it wouldn't be wrong and I set about making the least vegetable-like smoothie I could.
I decided a little Nutella would go perfectly with the banana and avocado, and I have to say, it did. This one is definitely a vegetable smoothie that I would make again.
What is the texture of this Nutella smoothie like?
This recipe makes a pretty thick smoothie and I had to use a straw to drink it. If you want a more drinkable smoothie, just add a little more milk to thin it down. You can actually eat this smoothie with a spoon. A banana avocado and Nutella smoothie bowl is also not a bad thing!
Banana, Avocado and Nutella Smoothie
- 1 banana
- 1 avocado a small one or half a large one
- 2 tsp Nutella
- 5 tbsp low fat yoghut
- 50 ml milk (add more for a thinner smoothie)
- Put all the ingredients except the milk in a food processor or blender. Puree until smooth.
- See how thick it is and if it is too thick, add a little milk to thin it down, just enough so you can drink it with a straw.

I use a Nutribullet 1000 to make my smoothies. It's powerful, easy to clean and easily blends tougher ingredients like nuts, root vegetables and ginger.
