These spicy air fried potato crisps are a real treat. So easy to make in the air fryer and a real hit with kids and adults. You can eat them as side dish or as snack. And if you don't have an air fryer, try making them in the oven!
I love my air fryer and I use it a lot for vegetable side dishes or just when I need extra oven space. The great thing about these air fried crisps or potato chips is that they can be a rather special homemade potato side dish or just a delicious snack.
If you like to reach for a packet of crisps in the evening then why not have a go at making them yourself. I don't mean all the time. I wouldn't make these homemade crisps all the time but they are perfect for an occassional special treat.
When you buy crisps, you have to choose from the flavours in the shop. When you make them yourself, you can be so much more creative!
What ingredients do you need for air fried potato crisps?
To make these crisps you'll need:
- A potato - I used maris piper for these and it worked. I peeled the potato too as there were a few blemishes but you can leave the skin on too.
- Herbs and spices - I used smoked paprika, garlic powder and oregano. Feel free to experiment with flavour combinations. You an use your favourite spice blend instead of these options.
- Salt - A little salt helps to bring out the flavours and helps the crisps to crisp up in the air fryer too.
- Oil - The crisps also need a little oil to help them crisp up. You can use vegetable, sunflower or olive oil.
How do you make air fryer potato crisps?
First slice the potato thinly. You can use a mandolin or a food processor if you have the right too. If you don't have any of these, just slice the potato as thinly as you can by hand.
Rinse the potato slices under cold running water and then leave them in a bowl of cold water for about 30 minutes. This will help reduce the starch in the potato and so help it to get more crispy once you cook it.
Drain the potato slices and pat them dry with a tea towel.
Put them in a bowl and add the seasonings and oil. I then use my hands to rub the seasonings into both sides of the potato slices.
Put them in the air fryer in a single layer and air fry for 10-12 minutes at about 185C. Depending on your air fryer you may need to keep turning the potato slices as well. The exact cooking time can vary depending on your air fryer and also on how thin you have sliced the potatoes.
If you need to, sprinkle a little extra salt onto the crisps when serving.
Can you adapt these air fried crisps?
Yes you can! Feel free to play around with the flavours. You could just use a spice blend. Cajun would probably work really well.
If you don't want extra spices then just add salt and maybe a little pepper. Once you've made them once you can be creative.
How long do they stay fresh?
I like to eat these potato crisps soon after they are made. They are at their crispiest when freshly cooked. But, if you don't eat them all, store them in an air tight container and they will keep for a couple of days. Just pop them in the air fryer to reheat and to crisp up again.
