There are few things better than the smell of freshly baked bread and making homemade bread in the bread maker is so much easier than making it by hand.
About 3 years ago I was visiting a friend and she made fresh bread. It only took a minute to put all the ingredients in the bread maker and two hours later we enjoyed warm homemade bread with butter that melted in. It was so good.
At that moment I decided I had to get my own bread maker.
I was so excited to start using it and for a few years I made all my own everyday bread. I only bought more unusual or special loaves of bread. Admittedly, after having children I went back to buying bread as well as we tend to get through it so quickly!
What can you use this bread maker bread for?
This bread is my everyday recipe. I use it for toast in the mornings and sandwiches to take to work for lunch. Although it is an everyday recipe it is still so good. It's perfect with a soup or salad.
How long does homemade bread last?
This bread lasts for about 3 days. If you think you won't eat it all in three days then just slice it and freeze it. You can take a few slices out of the freezer at a time or the whole loaf. It defrosts very quickly at room temperature.
What ingredients do you need for this bread maker bread?
The typical ingredients for bread are strong bread flour, yeast, salt, sugar, water and oil. This particular bread recipe uses a strong bread flour that also contains seeds. I quite understand that you might not be able to find that so you can substitute it for another bread flour.
This bread also contains a tablespoon of powdered milk. That's also something that you can miss out. Milk helps to enhance the dough and make it softer but it's not essential and most everyday bread recipes do not contain milk.
Can you miss out the salt?
I have tried missing out the salt but I didn't like the taste of the bread. I felt like I could taste the yeast.
After experimenting with a few different quantities I have found that one teaspoon of salt is the right amount for us. However, you can add an extra teaspoon for more flavour as salt enhances the flavour of the bread.
Does it matter what kind of oil you use?
It doesn't matter at all. I have used light olive oil and vegetable oil in this loaf recipe. Sunflower oil would also work well. Just don't miss out the oil as it helps the bread to slice well and helps it to last a little longer than bread made without oil.
Can you use butter instead of oil?
If you want to use butter then you can. Just melt the butter first and pour it into the bread maker with the other liquid ingredients.
What is the best bread maker to get?
I have a Panasonic bread maker and have been using it for over 10 years since this post was first written. It is reliable and I love the fact that it's got different settings although I mainly just use the standard bread setting and the dough setting . The dough setting is great as it kneads the bread for you and you can then use it for pizza bases or for bread roll which you then bake in the oven.

Recipe
Homemade Bread in the Bread Maker
Ingredients
- 7 g fast action dried yeast I often use half this amount and find it still works
- 500 g seed and grain white bread flour you can substitute for another strong bread flour
- 1 tablespoon dried milk optional
- 1 tablespoon castor sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt Add an extra teaspoon of salt for more flavour.
- 15 ml oil
- 350 ml water
Instructions
- Sprinkle the yeast in the bottom of the bread pan. Put the flour on top.
- Add the sugar, milk powder and salt. Drizzle with the oil. Add the water.
- Put the pan in the bread Maker and bake according to the settings for your machine. I use fast bake as I find the bread keeps fresh for longer than when I use the standard setting.

It's a Panasonic SD-253. It has quite a few different settings for different types of breads, although I tend to use the dough one the most and then use the dough for bread rolls to bake in the oven or pizza bases. The fact you can just measure in the ingredients and then leave it to make the dough makes bread making so much easier because the actual work that you do just takes minutes.

Love your everyday recipe, I will try it soon. Thank you for participating in World Bread Day.

I use the breadmaker to knead the dough, but we prefer the texture of the crust when it's baked in the oven, so I pull it out and bake it after it's kneaded. Still, we use our bread machine several times a week, and I'd miss it if it were gone.

My breadmaker is the most used machine in my kitchen. I make also dough for pizza there and I made the dough for the ravioli I posted. You did the right thing by using it.

I'll have to test out mine for pizza dough and ravioli. I haven't made pizza for a long long time so maybe it's something to try soon.
